Our Mysterious Hamstrings; the most common sources of misalignment in yoga

  • Downtown Yoga Fargo 216 Broadway N, Ste 204 Fargo (map)

Tight hamstrings seem to particularly limit our forward bends, but affect many other yoga poses as well. I personally experience tight hamstrings, and even with regular practice, it can be a frustrating limitation to tackle. If unattended the tightness in our hamstrings will impose on the health of the low back and often lead to back issues as we get older.

Likewise loose hamstrings can also lead to problems, pain and injury. Industry wide there is a growing number of complaints from experienced yogis, participants and teachers, with flexible hamstring experiencing injuries or pain in the sitting bones or knees and this nagging, or severe, pain can take a long time to go away.

The hamstrings are something we try to conquer or sometimes we see ourselves as lucky to “not” have that same tightness.  But, what are the side effects of not paying attention to the why or what is or could happen.

This workshop is designed for both Yoga Participants and Yoga Teachers (CEU’s are available)

In this 2 hour workshop we will:

  • Review the anatomy of the hamstrings, where they attach and their action in the body

  • Discuss postural evaluation and the relationship of how and why the hamstrings influence other muscles.

  • I will share key movements in poses involving the stretching of the hamstring for those with overly flexible hamstrings and the importance of balance - which is the key to avoiding pain and healing existing injuries.

  • We will discover the “why” it's important to what it really involves to keep the hamstrings working for and not against you in your yoga practice.

**CEU’s offered for all Yoga Teachers Yoga Alliance registered
